The centre-back, 30, had returned for pre-season with the Iron in an attempt to prove is fitness after severe knee problems.
He suffered the injury in only his second game for the club, the League Cup loss to Hartlepool United in August 2008, and have limited him to eight appearances in two seasons at Glanford Park.
He managed six appearances last season, including a run of four consecutive Championship games as the season drew to a close, but he lasted little over an hour of the pre-season win at Brigg Town before being forced to come off.
Nigel Adkins, the Iron manager, suggested at the time that Milne had to consider his future in professional football but the club suggested on Friday that he would seek further specialist help in a bid to continue playing.
