The midfielder went under the knife on Friday in a bid to cure the problem, which he suffered last season and aggravated at the start of pre-season training.
The Iron originally believed the problem suffered in training earlier this month was a different injury.
"The first time he did it was on the training ground with nobody around him, the second time was in the game against Exeter," Iron manager Alan Knill told the club's official website.
"[Club physio] Alex Dalton has told me its called a lapse ankle. What that mans is that no matter how much strengthening work you do on it the ligaments can go loose at any time.
"It was felt that once he had seen the specialist we needed to get him operated on sooner rather than later and get it sorted once and for all. We have been told [he will be out for] three months, but are hopeful it will be much sooner."
