The 21-year-old joined the North East Club from school but he is still waiting to make his debut for Steve McClaren's men and has been resticted to reserve team football at the Riverside. This seems unlikely to change now Boro have recently signed Carlo Nash.

Russell came to Glanford Park this morning for a trial and impressed Laws who decided to take him on a month's loan as back up for Tommy Evans straight away.

Russel said: "I had a phone call yesterday afternoon and I've been rushing about really, I just came down and things have panned out well today, I'm just looking forward to tomorrow".

His one taste of first team football was for fellow Division three side Darlington just after Christmas last season. Darlington drew the game 1-1 but Russell didn't get a second taste of football at Darlo.

He added: "I signed a month's loan deal at Darlington and got the one game in, we drew with Torquay one each and I did well but I was dissappointed because it was winter when I signed and all the rest of the reserve games got called off because of the pitch.

"Scunthorpe looks a great set-up and Brian Laws seems an ambitious manager so hopefully I can do well for him".
