Michael Jackson turns down United

The former Blackpool skipper, 34, was offered contracts until 2010 by both United and the Shrews.

He opted for a move to Shropshire because joining the Iron would have meant tearing himself away from his family

"In the end it came down to geography. Scunthorpe is over two and a half hours from my house and Shrewsbury is just 50 minutes," he told the PFA.

"It was a difficult decision and I had to give it a lot of thought but at the end of the day I've got a young family and I didn't want to have to be away from them during the week."

The centre back is excited by the ambition shown by the League Two outfit and is looking to win promotion with the Shrews next term.

"They've just made a big bid for Grant Holt - so they are definitely ambitious- we will be looking to win promotion," he added.

United boss Nigel Adkins is bound to be annoyed to see a second target join the same club a division lower in the same week.
