McCombe could still have Iron future

The lanky defender found himself at the centre of an unlikley tug-of-war between United and local rivals Lincoln City earlier in the month, with Iron manager Brian Laws refusing to allow McCombe to leave the club.

McCombe had been told that his contract would not be renewed in the summer and was free to try and find himself a new club, prompting his agent to set up a deal with the Imps which would have gone through just before the Lincolnshire derby between the two sides at Sincil Bank.

But Laws refused to allow the player to leave as he was needed for defensive cover, Lincoln have asked the FA to rule on the dispute but as he is still under contract it is unlikely he will find himself playing for a different club before the end of the season.

Lincoln are still chasing the player though, with Imps manager Keith Alexander telling Iron-Bru.net this weekend that he will be offered a deal `if he is available`.

The bizarre dispute with Lincoln has apparently served the player with a motivational boost, prompting Laws to consider offering him a deal to stay with the club.

He said: "If he shows that in games then there is an opportunity for him, if he does the things we know he can do then he might find himself here next season.

"If he does the right things then I will change my opinions."

Laws is continuing to chase an experienced midfielder to add to his squad, but has made no approach to 37-year-old Paul Groves - currently in an awkward situation at Grimsby after being relieved of his managerial duties but still being kept on as a player.

Laws said: "A lot of people are putting two and two together and getting five, nothing has happened.

"But if he does become available and we are still in the market then who knows."
