On Monday a minute's silence was held for German woman Ina Hentschel ahead of Alex Calvo-Garcia's benefit match at Glanford Park.
The club had been told she had watched Calvo-Garcia play as a youngster, but had been killed in the Madrid train bombings in March.
The crowd of 3,600 as well as star players such as Jordi Cruyff, Ivan Campo and Gaizka Mendieta observed a minute's silence.
But the Scunthorpe Telegraph has exposed it as a sick hoax.
No-one called Ina Hentschel died in the attacks, and there were no German casualties.
It was a ploy by a Middlesbrough fan who contacted the club to ask for tickets but apparently could not afford to travel.
Rather than own up to her financial situation she claimed to have been killed in the Madrid attacks.
She even posted on the Iron-Bru.net messageboard on the day of the match to ask if the minute's silence had been observed.
Graham Taylor, who managed the invitation XI who took on the club's 1999 promotion winning team, described the stunt as sickening.
He said: "It's totally sickening that someone shoud play a hoax like this - someone who does this is obviously in need of help."
