It ended a run of four consecutive League defeats, and moved United back into the play-off positions ahead of the fixtures on Saturday and Sunday.
Laws said: "It was vital to stop the rot and get some sort of result. We looked more like ourselves.
"We showed real grit and determination and created a lot of problems for Tranmere.
"But we had to keep our concentration. We knew if they scored it would create a tense finish."
Tranmere boss Brian Little admitted the Iron ran out deserved winners.
He said: "We were second best for much of the game and it's no good trying to gloss over things. Overall Scunthorpe were the brighter side and deserved to win.
"Our commitment and endeavour were spot on but things just aren't going for us at present.
"It was a big blow to concede a goal so early in the situation we are currently in and we were left with a mountain to climb.
"We continued to create chances but we are leaking too many goals."
