Lee Bradbury then netted his first ever goal for Southend early in the second half to calm the home side's nerves and Shaun Goater's late third goal added a gloss to the result for Steve Tilson's team.
Laws said: "We started very well and created several good opportunities in the first half but once they got their second we were always chasing the game.
"We can't dwell too much on it because we know what is at stake and we certainly know what we need to do to get ourselves stable in this division.
"Southend are there for a reason. They are a good side - they showed that against Colchester last week and also against us, I wish them luck."
Southend boss Tilson added: "It was not one of our best performances but I can have no complaints with the result. Two of our goals were of real quality and to keep a clean sheet was also very satisfying.
"But we are not getting carried away. There is still a long way to go and we can only take one match at a time and see what happens. But obviously we are in a good position and hopefully we can take advantage of it."
