Laws issues warning to players

A brace from goldenboots Paul Hayes, along with a Steve Torpey strike, sent United back to the top of League Two thanks to a 3-0 win over Bristol Rovers.

But, despite watching his side outclass the home side without having to get out of first gear, Laws warned his side to temper their excitement.

He said: "I've told the players that, while they've produced a terrific performance, it's no good if they don't build on it in our next home game.

"Rovers saw us at our best. We've played well here before and lost, but now we have an extra edge to our game and more experience.

"We passed the ball well throughout the game, and in the end it could have been a lot worse for them. They only had a couple of shots, which shows how solid we were."

Rovers manager Ian Atkins was left bemused at his side's woeful defending.

He said: "You can't give teams two-goal head starts. We worked hard at defending set-pieces, yetwe lost concentration twice in the space of a few minutes.

"I find that hard to take. Their third goal was a comedy of errors, and killed us off ocmpletely at a time when we were looking to get back into things.

"Their two strikers, Hayes and Torpey, lead us a merry dance. We couldn't handle them and, although I thought our midfield players worked hard, we were too sloppy at the back to deserve anything."
