A brace from Matty Sparrow, coupled with wonder strikes from Richard Kell and Cliff Byrne, saw Scunthorpe ease past Cheltenham.
It sees United close the gap to League leaders Yeovil to just three points, and puts breathing space between United and the chasing pack.
Laws said: "It was a hard fought game and Cheltenham, with a half chance of promotion had to win.
"We made it tough for ourselves at times and while I was not happy with the goal we conceded, it got us nervy, we settled down to have a much better second-half.
"There were signs of our old selves again, we were getting players in the box and kept Cheltenham pinned down.
"It was vital we created a little gap against the other sides in the race and back-to-back wins have enabled us to do that, our objective is to win automatic promotion."
Cheltenham's John Ward said: "The score was very harsh on the team. We came here to be positive and I thought we played some open and attacking football.
"We had as many efforts on goal as they did and we can still take a lot from the game against a strong and experienced side.
"The main difference was that they were more clinical in their finishing, but I thought there was some doubt about their second goal.
"We must focus on our remaining matches as we still have a chance of making the play-offs."
