Johnson has not yet featured this season as he is not fit enough.

But with Wednesday's reserve game against York postponed, Laws may opt to name the summer signing on the bench - with the chance of his first competitive action for the side.

Teenage striker Billy Sharp made a goalscoring debut at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and is likely to retain his place alongside Steve Torpey, although as United are in League action again on Friday night either could be rested in favour of Andy Parton or Andy Keogh.

Laws has hinted at resting key players - which could see Peter Beagrie, Wayne Corden or Ritchie Ryan handed starts.

Midfield duo Ian Baraclough and Richard Hinds picked up knocks during Saturday's win and will be rested.

United are still without long-term casualties Jim Goodwin (ankle ligament), Lee Ridley (hernia) and Tommy Evans (finger).

Tranmere boss Brian Little has no fresh injury or suspension worries, with Mark Rankine fit after an ankle problem.

Striker Calvin Zola remains sidelined with a stress fracture, youngsters Michael Johnston (knee), James Vaughan (knee) and Joe Fowler (thigh) are also out.

Rovers lost to early leaders Brentford on Saturday, and Little admits he is struggling to find the right style to adopt away from home this year.

He said: "We spent a lot of last season playing different systems away to the ones we used at home.

"There were times last season when we had one of the best away records.

"We only played badly on Saturday. Sometimes there's a lot of jumping up and down after games, such as when we beat Oldham 4-0 the other week and everyone got a bit over excited.

"This is just one of those things football managers have to deal with."
