He required stitches to his face and was left badly shaken by the incident.
Club manager Brian Laws said: "As a club we are shocked and saddened by what happened. "It took place while he was having a drink in a bar with his partner and some friends.
"We wll do all we can to help Mark with his recovery, and the police with their investigation."
