Iron unchanged for Doncaster derby

Doncaster are bottom of the league after losing 3-2 at Colchester last week - their fourth straight defeat.

Whilst United are riding high in League One, they dropped from second to third during the week after Swansea won their game in hand at Milton Keynes Dons, but victory for the Iron coupled with Swansea and Brentford failing to win away from home will see United move back to the top of the table.

The Iron will have over 2,000 supporters backing them at Belle Vue as they aim for their third away win of the season.

United are likely to be unchanged for the clash, though Laws may consider putting Matt Sparrow in the side in place of Cleveland Taylor in an attempt to make his side more solid defensively.

Andy Butler is still not fully fit yet and will not be risked, so Richard Hinds will continue to partner skipper Andy Crosby at centre-back.

Lee Ridley will not come straight back into the side either. Loanee Evan Horwood has returned to Sheffield United, and though Ridley may be in contention for a place on the bench, he knows he won't instantly get his place back.

Young Marcus Williams has proved a more than capable deputy and will continue at left-back, where he is slowly making the spot his own.

Andy Keogh and Billy Sharp will continue together up front, and will hope to continue their sparkling form.

Sharp has proved an astute signing from Sheffield United, while Keogh has revelled alongside his new strike partner, netting four times in three games.

Iron boss Laws is looking forward to the derby, but insists Doncaster's league position means nothing tomorrow.

"Unfortunately the form book goes out of the window when it's a local derby, but hopefully we can pile a little more pressure on them," said Laws.

"I still believe that they are in a false position. I don't believe for one minute that they are that bad."

Definitely missing for the Iron are Butler, Steve Torpey (hamstring), Jim Goodwin (ankle) and Tom Evans (finger).

United have started this campaign better than they did last year, when they won promotion from League Two.

Those words won't comfort under-pressure Doncaster boss Dave Penney, who knows that he has to get results quickly to keep the supporters on his side.

Just this week he was given the dreaded vote of confidence from chairman John Ryan.

"I have every confidence in Dave's ability to turn things around and get us back to winning ways," said the Rovers supremo.

"Obviously there been concern at our start to the season but as soon the players start gelling a little better I'm sure we will start to see an improvement in results."

Doncaster were this summer's big-spenders in League One, but have been hit by injuries and lack of form from their big players so far this season.

Midfielder Sean Thornton is sidelined for up to a month after undergoing an exploratory operation on an ankle injury, while Jermaine McSporran remains a long-term absentee with a serious knee injury.

Ex-Iron Tim Ryan, Adriano Rigoglioso and Tonny Nielsen are also sidelined through injury while Lewis Guy completes a three-match ban.

However, Simon Marples and Steve Roberts are pushing for inclusion.

Rovers sent out a warning in the week by beating United's reserves 3-0 at Belle Vue. The goals came from Adam Hughes, and strikers Neil Roberts and Paul Heffernan, who will be desperate to get their places back in the side.

The duo were substitutes in last week's defeat at Colchester, and the pair, who cost over £200,000 between them will be determined to help Rovers move up the table, beginning with victory over the Iron on Saturday.

The most recent encounter between these two sides at Earth Stadium was two seasons ago, in December 2003, the Rovers carving out a narrow 1-0 victory in a League Division Three match. Gregg Blundell, who is now plying his trade for Chester scored the winner.
