Iron paid no agent fees

Other clubs in League Two last season who followed the trend of paying nothing to were Bury, Cheltenham, Kidderminster, Lincoln, Rochdale and Rushden.

United's cash-strapped local rivals Grimsby paid over £24,000 to licenced agents last year.

Swansea were the division's biggest spenders, paying over £55,000 to intermediaries.

The Iron's fellow local rivals Hull City have shelled out almost £100,000 to agents over the last 12 months, whilst enjoying promotion from League One.

In total, clubs spent almost £8million on intermediaries last season, and Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney today called for the urgent introduction of a regulatory framework to govern agents in football.

The League is increasingly concerned with how much money is leaving the game.

£7.8million was spent by Football League clubs on agents - which represents nearly a third of the total £25million television money earned in a year - the Coca-Cola Championship accounted for £6.8million.

Lord Mawhinney said: ''The issue of agents is going up the agenda. It came up at our annual meeting.

"There is a lot of strong feeling, a lot of unified feeling amongst the clubs that a regulatory framework is required.

''Too much money is leaving football through payments to agents and League clubs have made it clear to me that they want a stronger regulatory framework governing how agents operate.''
