The full-back, who was 86, also scored 50 first-team goals in the League. Forty-nine came from the penalty sport.

Brownsword, who turned down moves to First Division clubs including Manchester City, had played for the Iron in the Midland League prior to election to the Football League in 1950 meaning he played in even more first-team matches for the Iron.

He famously marked the famous Stanley Matthews out of a game when Blackpool visited the Old Showground.

The Iron-Bru.net messageboard has been full of Iron supporters reminiscing about Brownsword, commonly known as “Mr Scunthorpe United”. Anecdotes include him visiting a supporter to give a signed photo of him with Matthews and sharing lifts to reserve games.

Steve Wharton, the Scunthorpe chairman, told the Scunthorpe Telegraph on Tuesday that he welcomed suggestions from supporters “of how we can commemorate his name.”

Suggestions from Iron-Bru.net users have included a statue outside Glanford Park as well renaming a stand or the Iron Bar.

Brownsword’s funeral will be held at St Andrew’s Church in Burton Upon Stather on New Year’s Eve.
