Laws said "Nathan's still finding it very difficult and I suspect he'll still be struggling for the game.
"We're really planning and hoping that he's going to be fit for the Boston game away and hopefully that'll help us strengthen our back four but at the moment Nathan is pretty much struggling which is very dissappointing and it was a significant factor on Tuesday night."
Against Mansfield, Laws chose to play a 443 formation with Paul Hayes playing in a right wing/striker role and Cliff Byrne in an unfamiliar right back role with Jamie McCombe at centre half.
It was a system he conceded after the match had not worked and so is unlikely to do the same tomorrow.
Laws has a number of other options at his disposal,c entral midfield man Wayne Graves played right back for the reserves mid-week and could play a similar role for the Iron tomorrow.
He could also play right wing where he played when he was subbed on in the Iron's heavy defeat against Mansfield.
Laws was staying tight lipped though saying: "I know what is best for us and have been making sure that the players know how we are going to go about the game tomorrow and what I expect of them."
Torquay come into tomorrow's clash at Glanford Park wary of an Iron backlash, with Gulls manager Leroy Rosenior knows it will be tough for his side to bounce back from their first defeat of the season against Rochdale on Monday.
He said: "They (Scunthorpe) will want to bounce back after the midweek result. They can go direct or they can play as well and there are not many teams at this level who can do both."
