"We are not playing Premiership or Championship clubs as I feel it is vital that we have competetive, realistic and winnable games in order that we can gain confidence and momentum and hit the ground running for a good start to the new season," said the Iron manager, whose side will also make a pre-season trip to Ireland.
"These fixtures may seem less attractive to the fans, but it will be beneficial to the the team and our preparation for the tough challenges ahead.
"It is Scunthorpe United we're supporting and not the opposition and hopefully fans will come and support us in the superb manner they did last year."
United had announced that they would play Irish side Kilkenny on July 21, but it is unclear whether that game will now go ahead.
