Iron board to discuss candidates

The Iron have been without a manager now for a week, with Ian Baraclough sacked following last Tuesday's 3-0 home loss to Preston North End. Assistant Kevin Pressman and first-team coach Steve Parkin also left the club.

Although the position has not been formally advertised, the club have received plenty of expressions of interest. It is unclear if Brian Laws, the former Iron manager who is favourite with the bookmakers, is one of them.

Steve Wharton, the Iron's chairman, expected to quickly narrow their search following Wednesday's meeting.

"We will have to decide whether to go ahead and advertise or whether we feel we already have sufficient options that we can look at," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"It is likely we will want to look at drawing up a short list of two or three people that we would like to interview. We would like to have someone in place as soon as possible, but the important thing is that we make the right choice."

Laws was in charge at Glanford Park from 1997 to 2006, with a brief hiatus in 2004 when he quit after being given a points ultimatum by then chairman Chris Holland.

He returned after three games - where Russ Wilcox had acted as caretaker boss. His second spell in charge at Glanford Park was undoubtedly more successful than his first, even though that had included a 1999 Division Three play-off win.

The Iron finished second in League Two in 2005, which was followed by comfortably surviving in League One.

In November 2006, with the Iron pushing for promotion to the Championship, Laws left to take charge at Sheffield Wednesday. The Iron went on to win the title under the guidance of Nigel Adkins, who was promoted from physiotherapist to manager.

Despite that record, Laws would be a controversial appointment with many supporters, with around three-quarters of voters in an Iron-Bru.net poll saying they did not want him to return.
