He has formed a formidable striking partnership with Steve Torpey, scoring 23 goals and topping the Third Division's scoring charts.
Following the Humber derby against Hull in November Taylor blasted the young striker as a diver, comments he repeated before the return match at the KC Stadium last month.
MacLean's response was to score a goal and celebrate by running to the Hull dugout and diving in front of Taylor.
Despite his criticism of the player, Taylor has now decided he will try and lure the striker to the wrong side of the river.
He told the Daily Record: "We are interested in Steven and I have been impressed on the occasions that I've been to see him.
"We have made an enquiry about his availability, although we realise that he is on loan away from Rangers at the moment.
"He is someone who I rate highly and has always done well when he's played against us."
MacLean, who signed a contract extension earlier in the season, has previously insisted he wants to try his luck at breaking into the first team at Rangers.
