Hayes, 27, left Glanford Park to sign a three-year-deal at Deepdale in the summer, but fell out of favour with manager Darren Ferguson and is currently on-loan at Championship side Barnsley.
Ferguson implied he would welcome Hayes back at the end of his loan next month, but the forward - who has had two productive spells in North Lincolnshire - looks likely to leave the Lancashire side.
"You never know in football, you can't predict anything. I need to speak to Darren Ferguson and see what he wants," he said when asked about a return by BBC Radio Humberside.
The striker said there has been no official approach from Scunthorpe to take him back to Glanford Park, even though manager Ian Baraclough has suggested he would be interested in the player if he was available.
"He [boss Ian Baraclough] hasn't said anything in those terms [about coming back]," he added.
