The forward, 26, is one of 12 out-of-contract Iron players mulling over offers to stay at Glanford Park. He held talks with the club in September over an extension, but the two parties were unable to agree a deal.
As a result Hayes has been considering his options, and told the Scunthorpe Telegraph that he held talks with the Lilywhites.
Despite that, he said he does not know where he will be playing next season - even though it is looking unlikely it will be in the claret and blue of the Iron.
"I have been really happy here at Scunthorpe in both spells that I have had with the club, but being a professional footballer is a short career and I have to look after the interests of my family," he said.
