The match wasin doubt following heavy snow on Tuesday, but local referee Peter Foulkes ruled that the game could go ahead after viewing the playing surface on Wednesday morning.

Us football secretary Caroline Pugh told Iron-Bru.net: "It was his verdict that while there was a layer of snow on the pitch, it had actually acted as a blanket and the ground underneath was perfectly playable."

The Essex club asked their fans for assistance in clearing the snow, but when match referee Steve Dorr inspected the pitch he called the game off.

Several games throughout the country have been cancelled, including:

Premiership: Blackburn v Sunderland, Bolton v Middlesbrough, Newcastle v Charlton.

Championship: Plymouth v Preston

League One: Blackpool v Oldham, Bournemouth v Barnsley, Doncaster v Brentford, MK Dons v Nottm Forest, Swansea v Gillingham.

League Two: Boston v Carlisle, Chester v Wrexham, Notts County v Northampton, Peterborough v Oxford, Rochdale v Bury, Shrewsbury v Macclesfield, Stockport v Torquay.
