But, in an incident sure to go down in the history books as Codsgategate, they have extended the deadline until the end of this week after what has been described by the Grimsby Telegraph - not one to mince their words - as sabotage.
The club may be desperate enough to sell off a rusty gate at their stadium, but they decided to reject the winning bid which would have seen the gate renamed as 'Scunthorpe 2 Grimsby 0 gate'.
A Cod'ead said: "We had some strange bids - one asked if they could call it the 'Scunthorpe 2 Grimsby 0 gate', the answer was no to that.
"We don't mind a bit of humour, but not negativity.
"Another question we had was can it be called 'The Gate of Despair', to which we replied they could have 'The Gate of Hope' instead."
The gate itself is dubiously described as 'among the most imposing that we have seen in the Football League'.
Bidding currently stands at £144, and as the Cods themselves say 'it could really be the gate to fame and fortune'.
