Codhead showing an Iron spirit

Scott Worboys is more widely known to United supporters as nexus_six_mariner, a regular poster on the Iron-Bru.net messageboard.

His contributions to the forum now amount to almost 3,500 posts, mostly inaccurate predictions of sporting failure for the Iron and success for Grimsby.

He had to take a break from the forum earlier this year, with most Iron supporters thinking it was due to his infamous predictions going horribly wrong - with the Mariners dropping out of the Football League, and the Iron securing Championship safety with something to spare.

It turned out he was battling cancer, a disease that claimed his mother last year. Despite losing a kidney he has beaten it and is able to watch his side lose continue their tradition of losing football matches, this time in the Conference.

He is taking part in the Leeds 10K run to raise money for the Bobby Moore Cancer Fund, and gamefully agreed to a challenge posted by Iron-Bru users to wear a Scunthorpe shirt while taking part.

Scott receives his Iron shirt

By Monday £570 had been donated by Iron supporters to his cause. Worboys met some Iron-Bru users before Saturday's 3-0 win over Crystal Palace to take receipt of the shirt he will wear in the run.

"Cancer doesn't care who you support. If it wants to have a go at you it will. Saturday, and the last two months has been a classic example of football rivalries set aside to fight for the same cause," he said.

"Grimsby fans, Scunthorpe fans, Leeds fans, Facebook friends, my employers and total strangers have given cancer a bloody nose. Hopefully someday cancer will be put to bed for good."

The run has also been supported by Scunthorpe United, who donated a signed ball. It is being auctioned off on ebay, along with signed Grimsby and Plymouth shirts.
