Staff and players of the club attended the sellout evening along with the lucky fans who got hold of the £35-a-head tickets.

Alex retires at the end of the season and will return to Spain, last night's benefit dinner was staged as part of the celebration of his eight years in North Lincolnshire.

He told the audience: "I know these are difficult times for the club. We are in a difficult situation.

"But our name is Scunthorpe united and I think the word united is more important than anything right now.

"Let's stick together, let's be united and let's keep our club in the Third Division of the Football League.

"I feel a very lucky and priviliged person, all I have ever received from the people of Scunthorpe are good words."

Former Iron manager Brian Laws, who left the club recently, felt he could not attend because the `wounds of the last two weeks have not quite healed yet` but a statement was read on his behalf by SUFC President Steve Wharton.

It read: "The players of Scunthorpe united have always been at the top of my priorities, they have been an absolute pleasure to work with.

"You Alex are no exception. As a person you have always possessed an abundance of special qualities.

"You will go down in history as one of the greatest and most popular figures of this football club."

As part of the night a series of signed football shirts were auctioned off, included a shirt signed by the current Real Madrid shirt - including David Beckham, Ronaldo and Zinidine Zidane - go to former director Des Comerford for over £800.

Fans who could not get tickets to last night's dinner will be able to show their appreciation on May 3, when the 1999 Wembley team will play against an invitation XI.
