Chairman criticises Wednesday

Laws took over at Hillsbrough on Wednesday, replacing Paul Sturrock, a week and a half after the Owls first asked permission to speak to Laws.

And Wharton has criticised the Yorkshire side's decision to publically declare their interest in Laws.

"It has been frustrating, and the longer it went on the more frustrating it became," admitted Wharton.

"I was disappointed that they had made it public before he was called for a second interview, as it had been agreed that both sides would remain silent unless he was called for a second time."

Wharton also warned Laws of the risk he is taking by heading to Wednesday, pointing out their quick turnover of managers.

"I pointed out the Brian the number of good managers who had been there and failed over the past eight or nine years," added Wharton.

"I also gave him some idea of what he could expect if we were promoted to the Championship."

United will receive £100,000 in compensation for Laws, with an undisclosed fee for his assistant Russ Wilcox.

Wharton had offered to waive any compensation for Wilcox if Sean McAuley, who has been acting as caretaker boss at Hillsborough, was allowed to move to Glanford Park - but Wednesday rejected the request.
