The 19-year-old played for United's reserves against Grimsby last week after losing his place in the Conference side's first-team.
He has made more than 90 appearances for the Us, but fell out of favour at the Abbey Stadium and has already been to Rushden and Diamonds on trial this season.
Newman said: "I have a good relationship with John, so I want to help him. He has a lot of potential and has lost some of the confidence that comes with playing and scoring goals.
"It is an opportunity for him to enjoy a loan period with a League side or their reserves, he is not in our team so it is a good chance for him to play some football at a good level."
