Byrne helps Irish to win

Despite captaining the side in the 5-1 friendly win over Poland last month Byrne was dropped to the bench as manager Don Givens opted for an experienced side for the Euro 2004 Qualifier - even though his side had no chance of qualification.

Two second half goals from Coventry City midfielder Graham Barrett sealed the win, with Byrne coming on as a sub when Ireland lead 1-0.

Byrne will stop the night in Ireland, before flying back to England in time to play for United at Boston United.
