The centre-back, 26, is a free agent having had his contract at Scunthorpe cancelled earlier this week. He was dropped from the team following the 4-4 draw with Northampton Town, a match where he was singled out for criticism as United blew a 3-0 lead.
He had agreed terms with the Scottish Premier League team Hamilton Academicals, who were expecting to complete the deal on Friday.
Instead he was in Somerset looking to win a deal with the Robins, who are looking for cover for their first-choice defensive pairing of Louis Carey and Liam Fontaine. Jamie McCombe, the former Iron defender, is recovering from stomach surgery.
"We're looking at him for a few days, and we'll have to make a decision one way or the other," Johnson told City's official website.
"He's missed about a month's worth of football after turning down a contract at Scunthorpe."
