The supremo has seen his side begin the season poorly but believes that the Blues have more than enough about them to avoid an upset tonight.
He told PA Sport: "I do feel it is possible for us to win the Carling Cup. We got to the final in 2001 as a First Division side and we are twice the side we were then.
"But sometimes the big clubs ease off a bit in this competition and give other clubs the opportunity - we have seen it time and time again where big clubs get knocked out.
"Getting through the early rounds is important. We know that from two years ago when Blackpool knocked us out.
"We must take these early rounds very seriously and I know Steve will be going there with his best players with a view to advancing."
