Beags steps down

Beagrie has been the club's captain since his arrival at Glanford Park in 2001 but has decided that the time is right to hand the captaincy onto another member of the squad.

That member of the squad is central defender Mark Jackson. Jacko captained the Iron towards the end of last season when Beagrie was injured and Beagrie feels the captaincy will help Jackson to become a better player.

"We can put on record that Mark Jackson will be our new club captain" United gaffer Brian Laws told the club's official site.

"It's a great credit to Peter Beagrie that he is willing to give someone else the opportunity.

"Peter believes that the extra responsibility will help Mark become a better player and I agree with him.  Peter will always be a talker on the pitch - it's not all about wearing armbands."
