The Iron made an immediate return to the second tier of English football thanks to a play-off final win over Millwall, with Adkins upbeat for the coming campaign.
"I believe we have a better group now than two years ago. Most of them are under contract, but I'm well aware that we need to add to that squad to give ourselves the best opportunity of still being a Championship team in 12 months' time," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
"We have to make sure the finances available are utilised properly. We sat down last week to draw up plans and obviously there are going to be different viewpoints about the finances coming into the building.
"As manager I have to try and push for as much money as I can to strengthen the squad."
