First-half strikes from Robbie Blake and Ade Akinbiyi were enough to give the Clarets a comfortable win at Turf Moor.
"We were very poor, Burnley were excellent, they were top drawer," said Adkins.
"The game was lost in the first-half and itwas the worst performance we have put in by a million miles - the first-half was not acceptable.
"We gave away two really poor goals and it's about us being collectively cohesive as a unit but the top and bottom of it is we weren't good enough."
Burnley boss Owen Coyle was understandably delighted with the result, which leaves his side just a point from the play-off places.
"I felt particularly in the first-half the level of performance and the quality of the goals was what we are after," he declared.
"The conditions were not conducive to good football and there was a lot to be pleased about especially in the first-half.
"It was a big three points, and all you can do is try and win all your games."
