Adkins says Tranmere played better

United looked flat in the opening half, but were much better in the second-half when Cliff Byrne's goal three minutes from time secured the point to setup a play-off semi-final clash with MK Dons.

Adkins admitted his side started slowly, but pointed to an impressive save from Josh Lillis just before the half-time interval to keep the score to 1-0 as a turning point in the game.

"We tried to get on the front foot but we didn't. We just didn't turn up," he said.
"Lilli made a terrific save just before half-time which was a turning point for us. It kept us in it. We've gone on to make a couple of opportunities.

"It was about the result, we've now scored 101 goals which is a club record in a season.

"The lads played their socks off, it was great character to come back. Tranmere were better than us on the day but we're through."

The point came at a cost for the Iron though, as Joeseph Mills suffered a rib injury and Andrew Wright suffered a facial injury that is likely to give rule him out of the first leg against the Dons on Friday.
