Hooper hit a brace to put the Iron ahead after the home side had taken an early lead, with Hurst completing the scoring after coming off the bench to replace Martyn Woolford.
"Hooper has scored two but it could have been several, the opportunities he created," said Adkins.
"He has a great understanding with Paul Hayes, they link up ever so well and he is a goal threat.
"And I was pleased that Kevan Hurst was able to get back in the team at the end and score a super goal to seal the tie for us."
Jimmy Mullen, the Walsall manager, felt his side had matched their opponents.
"The difference between the two sides was that they took their chances and we didn't," he said
"And we always knew that the front two of Scunthorpe were going to cause us a problem. We started the game brightly and we took the game to them as you would expect from the home team."
