But although United claimed one point, it could easily have been three as Cardiff - boasting the attacking talent of players like Robbie Fowler and Jimmy Flloyd Hasselbaink - failed to create chances against a resolute Iron backline.
In fact, had debutant goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel not tipped over a fierce drive from Paul Hayes after eight minutes the day could easily have turned United's way.
"We gave a good account of ourselves, we're very resolute and even when we went a goal down had a loss a of belief in ourselves," Adkins said.
"There are no superstars at our club, it is a team game and we all look for each other."
His mood was in stark contrast to home manager Dave Jones, whose side have only claimed one home win this season.
"We looked very nervous and weren't playing as fluently as we can although all the players are desperate to do well for the fans," he said.
"We seem to be getting punished for every mistake made at the moment but we still should have cut out the cross that lead to their goal.
"The older players must draw on all their experiences to see us through this difficult time."
