The success at Edgley Park followed last weekend's 1-0 home win over Peterborough United, with the six points coming as welcome relief after two league defeats and a first-round exit in the Carling Cup.
Two goals from the summer signing Gary Hooper plus a goal from Grant McCann sealed Saturday's victory.
And Adkins pointed to the result as an indication that the side is gelling well.
"This was a good stepping stone for us. Stockport and an excellent footballing side and we nullified their opportunity to play football," he said.
"We've brought eight players in since the end of last season. We've tried to assemble a squad of players that can do well over the course of the season.
"We're pleased to come away from home, score three goals and keep a solid shape about us."
