And although United were disappointed to have to settle for a point after leading the League One champions - the Foxes were presented with the trophy after the game - it was enough to move them back into the play-offs.
Tranmere Rovers will go back above the Iron if they beat Yeovil Town on Saturday, but Scunthorpe will guarantee a place in the end-of-season promotion lottery with four points from their final two games.
They are both at home, with Cheltenham Town visiting on Tuesday night before a potential winner-takes-all clash with Tranmere on Saturday.
And after a much-improved performance at Leicester, at least in the second-half, Adkins is confident of securing sixth-place in the final table.
"Credit to them, they have responded from the disappointment of the 3-3 draw on Tuesday night and we have come out here with a verve and a vigour," he said.
"They showed great character - that is what we have talked about, character and endeavour.
"We've now got two games to go. I think it will go down to the wire in our last game against Tranmere, which will effectively be a play-off game in its own right.
"I always said it would be a fantastic season if we reached the final game still in a position to challenge for promotion, and that is what we've done."
