Two stunning goals from the former Swansea man sealed all three points for the Robins, his first competitive strikes since his £1million summer move.
"Fair play to Bristol City. They invested heavily in one player and it paid off for them," said Adkins, who had seen Martin Paterson level Trundle's opening strike, before a stunning long-range curling effort sealed all three points for the Robins..
"We have been beaten by two great finishes. I am disappointed we allowed Trundle too much time on the ball, but you can't argue with the quality of his goals.
"We have a lot of character in our squad and we'll bounce back. We are in a big league now and know how difficult it will be to get points away from home.
"We will talk about how the goals were scored because we feel we should have got something from the match with the effort we put in on a stifling afternoon."
It was City's first win of the Championship season, after opening their campaign with draws against QPR and Blackpool.
And Robins chief Gary Johnson echoed Adkins' praise of Trundle.
"We knew Lee could produce those types of goals and that is why we bought him," he said.
"I told him before the game that there was no pressure on him and that we were looking for him to create goals as well as score them.
"Perhaps that was a motivation in itself. They were two wonderful efforts, but the whole team emerged with credit for battling so hard on such a hot afternoon."
