United edged a scrappy first half with a Grant McCann strike, but turned on the style in a fantastic second half performance to gain ground on Millwall and Leicester at the top of League One.
"We showed great commitment and desire. We worked hard for each other and played our football in the right manner," Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside.
"I'm pleased with all the players as we got a well-deserved victory. We've managed to keep the points ticking over and we've got plenty of players scoring goals.
"It's a case of making sure we have that defensive platform and we've kept our second straight clean sheet, which is pleasing."
Adkins was also keen to praise Ben May, Martyn Woolford and Krystian Pearce, likening the strong youngster to Portugese legend Eusebio.
