Goals from Billy Sharp and Jermaine Beckford sealed the 2-0 success, which opened up the substantial gap at the table after Oldham crashed 3-0 at Port Vale and Nottingham Forest conceded a late equaliser against Blackpool
"I am ecstatic with the result because we came trying to make history with 12 games away from home unbeaten and we put in a magnificent performance," said Adkins.
"Swansea threw everything at us and Bayo Akinfenwa caused us a lot of problems before his injury and we couldn't contain them.
"But we took the lead and that had given us something to hang onto.
"We couldn't push on for another because Swansea wouldn't let us but then Mackenzie had a super strike and we've got a second.
"Our two strikers have scored and a magnificent defensive performance has given us a clean sheet so it was a true team effort."
Swansea caretaker manager Kevin Nugent admitted his side are lacking confidence - threatening to disrail their play-off ambitions.
Nugent was in charge for only the second time, after Kenny Jackett stepped down as boss at the end of last week.
"It's not the result we were looking for, but we had a lot of possession and the two goals really killed us," he admitted.
"We huffed and puffed, but the little bit of confidence we had was totally drained by the goals.
"All credit to Scunthorpe - they defended well and they didn't give us a sniff. We will have to learn from that."
