United will be bookies favourites to beat the League One side, especially considering Pools boss Danny Wilson's declaration that he will play a reserve squad.
But Adkins knows the financial importance of a cup run as he works to add to his squad before the transfer deadline slams shut at the end of the month.
"We got a super result at The Valley but we cannot afford to let this be a case of after the Lord Mayor's show," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
"It's a cup game - and one we want to win. We want to go further in this competition."
But while the visitors appear ready to rotate their squad, that is a luxury Adkins is not afforded.
On-loan defender Kelly Youga is expected to play, after being ineligible to play on Saturday, while Matty Sparrow will be given a runout to continue his push towards match fitness.
Players like Martin Paterson, Dave Mulligan, Josh Lillis and Peter Winn will also be hopeful of featuring after missing out agaisnt the Addicks.
"We only have a small squad and everybody has their part to play," added Adkins.
