An early Garry Thomson goal and a Rob Jones bullet header either side of a fine strike from Gylfi Sigurdsson sealed a fantastic win at the Madjeski Stadium.
"Any point gained in the Championship for Scunthorpe United is a good one so for us to get three today is fantastic," said Adkins.
"Reading are one of the favourites to go up so for us to get a win there is excellent. I was delighted to get the result that we got against an excellent side."
He also gave an update on David Mirfin, who was taken to hospital with a shoulder injury following a heroic tackle to deny Reading a goalscoring opportunity.
"It was a fantastic challenge by David and it epitomised the performance on the day. Hopefully it's nothing to serious," he added.
