ACG hopes this could finally be Spain's year

Alex Calvo-Garcia wrote his name into United's history books with the winning goal in the 1999 Division Three play-off final, ending an eight-year spell at the club in 2004 when he retired.

And although it may not quite match that famous May day at Wembley, Calvo-Garcia enjoyed further footballing success last month when he was part of the Spain side which won the European Mountain Village Championship in Switzerland.

"We did really well to manage to win the tournament, maybe our national team can follow in our footsteps," he told Iron-Bru.net.

"The tournament took place at Gspon in Switzerland. It was a wonderful place with great mountains and scenery.

"I met some guys from the UK, even a guy from Sweden told me that he could remember me. It was great to see people from my second home as I still miss Scunny."

It has been four years since Calvo-Garcia left North Lincolnshire, a place he arrived in as an unproven player looking to make his mark in the game and left as a fan favourite, married and with a young family.

The team's fortunes on the pitch have been transformed in that period. He left just after Scunthorpe had finished 22nd in the bottom tier of league football, and the season just gone has seen the side competing two divisions higher.

Calvo-Garcia continues to follow the Iron, keeping up with the latest happenings via the internet - "Iron-Bru is my way to keep myself informed of what is going on at SUFC" - and attends the odd game.

"I sadly saw Scunny being relegated, although I know they are in great hands as Nigel Adkins is a great person and a very competent manager," he added.

"Next year we will be serious contenders for promotion and our supporters will be proud again."

Calvo-Garcia's footballing career is still going strong. He will be playing in a seven-a-side competition finals in Madrid later this month and will take his veterans team to Dublin to take on a team made up of Irish Iron members.
