AUSTRALIAN IRISH IRON
|
Paul takes up the story of how he became an Iron: "I have no particular affiliation with Scunthorpe with no friends or relatives having lived there and I have no immediate Irish ancestry, although there is some Irish blood on my mother's side of the family, probably going back a couple of hundred years ago when Australia was a penal colony (I think I picked up a lot of genes from this stock).
"30 years ago in Australia we got very little coverage of English football, let alone European or South American stuff and the only full game we ever got to see on TV was the FA Cup final.
"My football mates and I used to follow the various English leagues and cup competitions mainly via results printed in the press and the limited TV coverage.
"Most of these mongrel mates took the easy road and jumped onto the bandwagons of the more successful top-flight clubs of the day, eg. Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Nottm Forest, etc., whereas I, as a non-conformist, preferred to follow the underdog, my theory being that success for the downtrodden is all the more sweet.
"Consequently I embraced The Iron and have been following their highs and lows ever since. When I recently saw the Irish Iron supporters club on The Iron website, I just had to join. Should any fellow members of Irish Iron be coming down this way at any time, I would be only too pleased to welcome them, give them the drum on where to go/where not to go - perhaps over a pint or two? Please feel free to give anyone interested my contact details."
