They don’t need to know.
Against Cambridge we played well and lost. Against Torquay we were outplayed for the first half hour and when they scored, most of us just hoped we could limit them to one until half time. And then we scored two and could even have gone in 3-1 up. Torquay played good football without doubt and you could see why they are up with the leaders. Your heart goes out to those Torquay supporters who made the trip. They travel all that way to see their team take a well deserved lead after 30 minutes but by the end of the game they have shipped five and it looks like they were gubbed. And then the long trip home only to find a tree has blown over and demolished their greenhouse (probably).
Two incidents from Saturday worth mentioning. Firstly was it a back pass? I personally thought it was and it would be interesting to have Gravesy’s view. My view is that Tommy was wrong to pick it up. It must have been obvious that whatever Wayne Graves meant to do it looked for all the world like a back pass and that if he picked it up an indirect free kick was more than likely. Secondly Peter Beagrie’s booking. This was his ultra competitive (petulant) streak surfacing again. Beags is a class act and our season depends on him, that is why we do not want to have him suspended for picking up a string of unnecessary bookings.
Another welcome surprise on Saturday was the new pull out section of the Evening Telegraph - actually just called the Telegraph these days but I wouldn’t want you getting confused and buying the Daily Telegraph in the mistaken belief that they now do a special pull out section on the mighty Iron. Anyway the new Matchday section is excellent, this almost makes up for the travesty that is the Sports Telegraph. If Scunthorpe won the European Cup the Sports Telegraph would still lead with their beloved Mariners and the ‘Scunthorpe 3 Real Madrid 1’ report would be on page 17 underneath the fishing reports. What they will do this time next year when Scunthorpe are fourteen places above Grimsby in Division Two remains to be seen. But Matchday I like.
